The town’s name literally came from “stone” or “rock” as it was named after a pile of stones from the River Trent raised on the graves of Prince Ruffin and Wulfad. These princes were killed by their father, King Wulfhere of Mercia. The reason behind the killings is the conversion of the princes to Christianity.
