Bierton

Bierton parish lies in the Vale of Aylesbury, to the north-east of the Aylesbury Parish. It contains 2, 476 acres of land which is mostly utilized as farmland, which makes Bierton a farming parish. The civil parish of Bierton with Broughton within Aylesbury Vale comprised of the hamlets of Broughton, Kingsbrook, Broughton Crossing, and Burcott. However, the parish was broken into 3 in 2020 and Bierton became an independent parish.

History

The village name was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ‘Bortone’ that translates to “farmstead near a stronghold” in modern English. There was a substantial Beglic settlement that once occupied the village with an extensive ditched enclosure. Excavations in 1979 detected four phases of occupation in the area, however very little is visible today as the ditches were deliberately filled in the first century.

Bierton’s development as a village was not easy, due its being a linear settlement along the last road leading from Aylesbury to have its toll gate removed. Furthermore, merchants were initially wary of traversing the route as it costed more compared to the less expensive routes via Winslow and Buckingham. Despite this, the village remained an important point on this alternative northward route due to the presence of a wagon pond. Wagon ponds were used to swell the wooden axles of carts and was a popular watering spot for carthorses.
