Southcourt

Southcourt is a housing estate in Aylesbury with plenty of history. Aylesbury developed the estate from a pig farm of the same name in the 1920s but was interrupted by the Second World War in the mid-1930s. It later became a post war housing estate during the years 1946 to 1955. Today, Southcourt is home to a thriving and progressive community that continues to honor its proud past.

History

All but one farmhouse were demolished during Southcourt’s development in the 1920s. This farmhouse still stands at Cottesloe Road, on the junction of Clover Lane. The surviving farmhouse was the original farmhouse built at the start of the 20th century. The Duke of York himself had cut the first sod for the rest of the estate in 1922. This momentous event led to one of the roads being named York Place in his honour. The housing was publicized as “Homes for Heroes” at the time and the first houses on the estate were exclusively for the veterans of the First World War.

The difference of pre-war and post-war estates at Southcourt

Pre-war houses at Southcourt consisted of terraced and semi-detached redbrick and rendered houses. Some also take the form of low-rise flats. On the other hand, post-war house are built at a higher density using brick, concrete, and steel with timber (now plastic) cladding.
